United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the Burmese government’s unilateral declaration of a ceasefire in Kachin State and is following the various reports from the ground on its implementation, his spokesperson said on Sunday.

“He [Ban] calls upon both sides to make serious effort to create conditions for sustained peace in Kachin through enhanced confidence building measures and political dialogue,” Mr. Ban's spokesperson said. “He also calls for renewed access to vulnerable civilian populations in the area to enable the supply of humanitarian assistance to them.”

However, reports from the Kachin rebels suggest the Burmese military is continuing assaults on KIO positions around Laiza in an effort to seize the high ground and block supply lines into the strategic Kachin town.
