The EU High Representative released a statement commenting on the ongoing conflict in Kachin State on Tuesday.

“The High Representative is deeply concerned about the continuous fighting in the Kachin State,” said Catherine Ashton, the spokesperson for the High Representative. “The latest reports of the shelling of Laiza and the resulting deaths of innocent civilians are particularly troubling. They point to a dangerous escalation of the conflict leading to more suffering for the people in Kachin.”

She called for all sides to end hostilities and engage in dialogue towards a settlement immediately.

The statement follows an artillery strike by Burmese government forces on a house in Laiza on Monday, in which three Kachin civilians were killed and five were wounded. At least one child was among the dead, local sources told Mizzima.
