Solar power for off-grid rural populations in Burma is to be set up by SPCG Public Company Ltd., The Bangkok Post reported last week.
"Electricity supply in Myanmar is falling short of demand that has grown rapidly.” said the Thai energy company’s chairwoman Wandee Khunchornyakong to the newspaper. “The country's capacity of electricity production is only 2,500 MW for a population of 55 million, compared with 32,000 MW to serve Thailand."
Mridul Chadha, writing for the industry publication Clean Technica said, “[SPCG] has significant experience in the solar power sector in the Southeast Asia region. It is now planning to enter the new market of Myanmar which could open up highly attractive new sources of revenue.”
Renewable energy is seen as a great investment opportunity in Burma. Such small-scale and off-grid renewable energy projects are likely to play a critical role in the economic development of the large rural population of the country, said Chadha.
