Burma will host the 2013 World Economic Forum (WEF) on East Asia, the WEF executive chairman said at the close of the session.

U Than Htay, the Union Minister for Energy of Myanmar, invited the forum to choose a city to host the event.

Klaus Schwab, the WEF founder and executive chairman, said significant progress had been made in Burma, although much remained to be done.

“We accept the invitation and expect great hospitality in Myanmar next year. We're confident we will see substantial progress in the country,” he said on the final day of the three-day conference.

U Than Htay, Myanmar's Union Minister for Energy, said the country's facilities and infrastructure would be ready to host the WEF next year.

More than 640 business leaders attended the WEF in Bangkok last week, which was highlighted by the first foreign trip by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 24 years.

Burma was a major topic at this year's regional WEF conference, which carried the theme “Shaping the Region's Future through Connectivity”.

He said in a session focused on Myanmar's future that reforms aimed to ensure basic public services, improved living standards, infrastructure and social equality for the public.

Burma is scheduled to host the 2014 summit meeting of the Asian Association of Southeast Asia nations.

Under the theme “Shaping the Region's Future through Connectivity,” this year's forum hosted by Thailand attracted participants from 50 countries, including some heads of state or governments.
