(Mizzima) – The main topic of the 4th General Mekong Sub-Region (GMS) Summit now underway in Burma is land transport in the region.

Leaders will explore development of economic transportation corridors in the next decade especially railway networks in member countries because railways can help reduce transport costs, according to an article in The Bangkok Post.

At the meeting, three memorandums of understanding (MoU) will be signed. They comprise the Joint Cooperation in Further Accelerating the Construction of the Information Superhighway and its Applications in the GMS, the Joint Action to Reduce HIV Vulnerability Related to Population Movement, and the Establishment of the GMS Freight Transporters Association. Many countries are paying increased attention to the southern economic corridor which links Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam with a possibility of connecting ports in these countries.

A Thai government source said it will use the occasion of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s visit to Burma to hold a separate meeting with Burmese officials and investors to negotiate transport and energy development projects linking the Dawei industrial complex in southern Burma with the west of Thailand.
