Suu Kyi’s portraits sell big to U.S. buyers, embassy

New Delhi (Mizzima) – In a National League for Democracy art exhibit intended to raise funds for charity work and promoting political activities, eight paintings have sold through Monday, most of them purchased by US citizens or organizations.

All eight paintings are portraits of Aung San Suu Kyi. Six were bought by US citizens or groups and two were bought by people inside Burma. The total value of the eight paintings was 1.3 million kyat (about US$ 1,600).

NLD spokesman Ohn Kyaing told Mizzima that among the six paintings bought by foreigners, one painting was bought by the Rangoon-based U.S. embassy and five were bought online.

A special painting in the exhibition is a oil portrait of the late national hero General Aung San, Suu Kyi’s father, painted by 88-generation student leader Htay Kywe, who is serving a prison term in Buthidaung Prison

The NLD information office and individual artists organized the 59-painting exhibit titled “Portraits of Myanmar People.” Funds will be used in NLD-affiliated education services, health services and charity work for prisoners.

The art exhibition will end on Tuesday. The portraits of General Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi, Win Tin, Ludu Sein Win and composer Nay Win are included in the exhibit, along with works in oil, acrylic and pencil by artists Win Pe Myint, Tin Aung Kyaw, Htin Lin Naing, Thandar Khine, Kyi Thar Aye, Kyaw Lin and Pho San.
