Rangoon – A second respect-paying ceremony for elderly Burmese musicians, age 80 and above, was held in the Rangoon City Hall at 9 a.m. on Monday.

Organised by the Myanmar Music Association (MMA), the ceremony honored 46 elderly musicians.

A MMA spokesperson said that 200,000 kyat (about US$ 200) was donated to each musician.

The donors were township-level music associations, the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, FM broadcasting stations and film and performance artists.

In attendance at the ceremony were Information Minister Kyaw Hsan and Rangoon Mayor Aung Thein Lin.

Last year, 37 elderly musicians received 150,000 kyat (about US$ 150). Four of them have since died.

The junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party donated 2.15 million kyat (50,000 kyat for each musician) in this year’s ceremony, according to Maung Maung Latt, the MMA chairman.
