New Delhi (Mizzima) - Fire swept through at least nine municipality flat blocks in the former Burmese capital of Rangoon this evening, a fire official said.

The fire started at around 6 p.m. in the municipal staff housing blocks on Thitsa Wardy Street in the Aung San Ward Quarter of Insein Township and required four fire engines to bring it under control about 20 minutes later, an official from Insein Township Fire Department told Mizzima.

“[Some of] the municipality apartment blocks were gutted in the fire. We are still investigating its cause … and the value of the damage”, he said.

A local resident from Aung San Ward said: “Yes, The fire broke out at the apartment buildings for municipality employees. The buildings are near the railway line”.

There are three to six rooms in a block, the resident said.
