Rangoon (Mizzima) - An elderly smoker died in a fire at his home in Shwepyithar early on Tuesday morning, a township fire official said.
The blaze at No. 469, Khetta Street, 19th Quarter was reported at 1am.
Mya Thein, 78, was found dead of smoke inhalation, the Shwepyithar fire department officer said, on condition of anonymity. “The victim left a cigarette near his bed and fell asleep. The fire then spread to his mosquito net. His son was woken by the sound and he saw the fire.”
The township’s fire station received a call from a neighbour at 1am and its firefighters reached the scene at 1.10pm, the official said. They managed to keep damage to a minimum after extinguishing the blaze.
