Chiang Mai (Mizzima) - Burmese Prime Minister General Thein Sein visited Cyclone Nargis devastated Irrawaddy delta on January 9 and inspected developmental projects to aid cyclone victims.

The Burmese premier was airlifted to Pathein town, capital of Irrawaddy division, in a helicopter. He also visited Mawlemyinekyun and Laputta towns, where he inaugurated the opening of a bridge and inspected progress made on cyclone shelters being built.

Thein Sein and group’s visit came in place of an earlier rumor of Burma’s second in command in the junta hierarchy, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, paying a visit to the cyclone devastated Irrawaddy delta.

Burmese military supremo, Senior General Than Shwe has ordered businessmen and companies to complete construction of cyclone shelters, schools and other projects latest by March 31, 2010.

However, an official, who was in the inspecting team said, it is doubtful that the constructions would be completed by the given deadline.

He added that Than Shwe might be wanting to complete all government projects before the scheduled general elections, for which no specific date has been announced, to showcase them as part of a poll plank.
