New Delhi (Mizzima) – The Burmese military junta on Thursday announced amnesty for 7114 prisoners, saying it was on humanitarian grounds and to enable the prisoners to serve national interest.
The announcement, which will be publicly made in the evening news cast, was flashed on the Myawaddy Television on the scroll bar.
“On humanitarian grounds and in order to serve the interest of the nation and their region, 7114 prisoners on September 17, 2009 are given amnesty,” a local resident of Rangoon read out the news flash being scrolled on the Myawaddy TV to Mizzima.
Ohn Kyaing, spokesperson for the National League for Democracy (NLD) said, since the amnesty was announced today, the prisoners are likely to be released on Friday.
“I am not sure if the amnesty will include political prisoners. We are hoping against all odds,” he added.
